Getting to know me: Some FAQs

Q1: Am I a dietician, nutritionist, food scientist or teacher?

No, I’m definitely none of the above. I’m just a very ordinary granny (or “Gaga” as I am known in my family) who is interested in trying to encourage young children to cook more.

Q2: Am I a good cook?

Unfortunately, no, I am not a good cook! I’m not a bad cook as such, but I am very inconsistent. I like experimenting and I struggle to keep to recipes with too many ingredients – more than five and I rapidly lose the will to live!

Q3. What are my top 5 favourite dishes/foods:

  • Green and Blacks 70% dark chocolate – absolute winner!
  • Roasted tomato soup – only 3 ingredients and 3 easy, no fail instructions…
  • My son’s roast dinner gravy – I have been known to eat this from
    the jug with a large spoon;
  • 4 ingredient flapjacks – almost completely idiot proof;
  • Sweet potato wedges carefully dipped in creamy guacamole…sheer deliciousness.

Q4: Am I a vegetarian?

No, I don’t eat meat but I’m not a vegetarian, I am a pescatarian – in other words I do eat fish. When I gave up meat over 30 years ago, it was at a time when there were lots of scandals concerning how badly animals were being treated in our food chain. Things are so much better now, especially with the increased availability of organic meat, so sometimes I feel I could in all conscience start eating meat again, but I can’t bring myself to do it just yet.

I do, however, admit to accidentally eating a very tasty pulled beef canapé instead of its cheesy cousin at a wedding recently. I remember at the time thinking it was rather fibrous for cheese but for once I didn’t make a scene and just kept chewing and savouring its sheer deliciousness! Maybe that will turn out to be my gateway canape to meat eating again…
